English Learner Program

introduction

Welcome to AUSD's English Learner Program. We are committed to providing services and supports to our English Language Learner students and families. This page is currently under construction and will be updated by the end of September. In the meantime, if you or your student needs help, please contact Nancy Lai (Language and Literacy Coordinator) or your site principal.

English Learner Services

AUSD assists students with languages other than English in their backgrounds to develop proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing English.  The English Language Development support team supports the sites’ English Language Development (ELD) programs, providing services to over 2,333 English Language Learners (ELLs).  We conduct the initial assessment of new students with a language other than English, place them in appropriate programs according to their levels of English language proficiency, and monitor their progress, including administering the annual assessment of listening, speaking, reading, and writing on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) to all K-12 English Language Learners.  District ELD support staff assists sites in creating their English Learner Advisory Committees (ELL parent/guardian groups known as ELACs) and also conduct district-wide District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) meetings on a regular basis.
