Becoming an AUSD Substitute

AUSD has a continual need for substitutes, and we welcome people who would like to become a part of our team!

For the most up to date substitute rates please visit our salary schedules page. Please note that substitute teachers who choose to work for Alameda Unified will be assigned at the discretion of the District.

How Do I Become a Substitute

If you already have a teaching credential, you can search edjoin for our current certificated job openings (which include substitutes). If you don't have a teaching credential, you can get an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, by following the steps below.

Permit Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree or Higher
Verified by an original, official transcript from a regionally-accredited university.
- Electronic transcripts are accepted if emailed by the university directly to swong@alamedaunified.org; otherwise a hardcopy will be needed
- Foreign transcripts evaluations must be original, from a Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved agency
- Copies, PDFs, unofficial transcripts, diplomas, etc. are not acceptable
Fingerprinting for the CTC
- Applicants holding a CTC Certificate of Clearance are exempt.
- All others needed to be fingerprinted (use this live scan application form).

Permit Application Process

Create an educator/user account with CTC.
Drop off the following items in a sealed envelope to Human Resources, c/o Sandy Wong:
- Completed 41-4 application
- Official Transcripts
Notes
- Please allow 10 business days from the time you drop off your materials for processing.
- You will receive an email from CTC when you have been recommended for the permit. (Occasionally, the email generated from CTC may go to your spam folder, so please also check there.)
- After 10 days, you may email Sandy Wong at swong@alamedaunified.org with your inquiries.
