Literacy
Introduction
One of the three Focus Areas in AUSD’s 2023 Strategic Plan is to construct a “strong foundational program for all students.” A key component of that foundational program is the creation of a rigorous literacy program in pre-K through 3rd grade, so that students develop the critical reading skills on which they will rely throughout their academic journey.
Since 2023, AUSD staff have been focused on developing a literacy framework that includes effective curriculum, consistent professional development, and multiple supports.
"Education research has consistently shown that students who achieve reading proficiency by the end of third grade are more likely to succeed in later grades" - Tanya Harris, Director, Elementary Education
