At its March 25 public meeting the Board heard presentations on:

AUSD’s AVID Program
AVID, which stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, is a program that supports students' executive functioning, critical thinking, organizing, and communication skills.  Studies have shown that students who participate in AVID programs are more likely to:

  • Enroll in AP and Honors classes
  • Complete a college-reading curriculum
  • Be accepted by and stay in a four-year college

During the 2023-24 school year, AVID was introduced for 5th grade at Ruby Bridges, 6th grade at Wood Middle School, and 9th grade at Encinal Jr./Sr. High School. In 2024-25 AUSD expanded the program to 4th/5th grade at Ruby Bridges, 6th/7th grade at Wood Middle School, and 6th/7th and 9th/10th grades at Encinal Jr. & Sr. High School.

In 2025-26, the program will expand to grades 4-12 at these three school sites.

During the presentation, staff and students from all three schools described how the program is being implemented and what the benefits are.
Update from AUSD’s Office of Equity
Staff from AUSD’s Office of Equity described programs that have been implemented to ensure all students have equal opportunities to learn and achieve in our schools.

The presentation covered:
  • Mentoring/advising
  • Professional development
  • Curriculum/instruction

  • Student outcomes
  • Next steps

During the presentation staff and students spoke to the effectiveness of their programs.
2023-24 Parcel Tax Program Updates
Staff presented on the 2023-24 Annual Parcel Tax Program Report. The report includes information on the revenues and expenditures for AUSD’s two parcel taxes: Measure B1 and Measure A. The two parcel taxes bring in about $24 million per year annually and are used to pay for programs and staff across the district. The chair of the Parcel Tax Oversight Committee presented the committee’s annual report, as well.
CSEA 860’s “Sunshine” of Initial Proposals for Collective Bargaining
AUSD and CSEA-860 are negotiating a successor agreement this spring. CSEA-860 President Lee Smith presented the union’s initial proposals (called “sunshining”).
Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators
School districts facing hiring challenges are allowed to hire educators who are not yet fully credentialed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Staff asked the Board to approve its Declaration of Need for approximately 31 teachers for next year. The Board approved this request 4-0 (Board Member Little was not in attendance.)
