There is a strong chance that as of November 1, the federal government will stop sending SNAP funds to states. That means that:

  • If you have a CalFresh card, you’ll be able to use the funds that you already have.
  • But no additional money will be added starting November 1 (unless something changes at the federal level).
  • New applicants or renewals approved in late October may experience delays in receiving benefits.

We know this will be a hardship for some of our families, and we want to be sure that all families know where food is available via AUSD, in our community, and across Alameda County.

AUSD Meals

School meals will still be available even if SNAP is delayed. As a reminder:

  • All students in AUSD can get one free breakfast and one free lunch per day at their schools.
  • At most sites, students who miss the breakfast served before school can get a “second chance” breakfast during their first recess.
  • Students in our ELOP afterschool program receive either a dinner or a snack every day.
  • Most schools offer “share tables” in the lunch room where children can pick up unopened school meal items that other students didn’t eat to snack on or bring home.

Food Resources in Alameda and Alameda County

  • You can get food at the Alameda Food Bank via its “Island Community Market” at 677 W. Ranger Avenue. You can make an appointment to shop or drop in, and curbside pickup is available for people with mobility issues.
  • The Alameda County Community Food Bank can connect you to sources for groceries, prepared meals, and food delivery via their FoodNow website or their helpline (1-510-635-3663).
  • Alameda County’s 211 website lists dozens of resources for food. Calling 2-1-1 connects you to a live Community Resource Specialist; confidential help is available in more than 300 languages.

How to Help

We know many AUSD community members would like to help their neighbors during this time, and we so appreciate your care and generosity! We encourage you to donate food or money to the Alameda Food Bank (the flyer below lists what they most need). We are also exploring ways to provide food via our school sites and will have more information about this next week.
