The City of Alameda has alerted AUSD that the Public Works Department will be working on safety improvements around several school sites over the next several weeks. These projects may result in temporary detours for pedestrians, cyclists, and cars. Please avoid or drive carefully around these sites, and remember that rainy and foggy weather can make it extra hard to see cyclists and pedestrians.

The City of Alameda Public Works Department will be improving multiple street segments and intersections as part of the City’s Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Improvement project. I apologize for the very short notice of this work as we are trying to complete the construction of this project by the end of the year. Due to forecasted wet weather and the upcoming holidays, our contractor will be working the end of this week: tomorrow and Friday (12/18-12/19). Temporary bike, ped and vehicular detours are expected intermittently. Please encourage parents and students to look out for detour signage. If necessary, the contractor is planning on returning to finish any incomplete work the week of January 5-9, 2026. The contractor will remove the ‘No Parking’ signs once work is complete at each location.

The improvements will be made within the vicinity and walking or biking routes to multiple schools citywide. Improvements included in this project were developed from the School Site Assessments (SSAs) conducted by the Alameda County Safe Routes to School Program. The goal of these improvements is to increase the safety of children walking and biking to these schools by raising their visibility at intersections and in crosswalks, and by slowing the traffic surrounding schools. This includes high-visibility crosswalks, bulbouts with bollards, advanced stop bars, improved loading zones, new signage, and intersection daylighting (red curb). 1. Academy of Alameda

   1. Poggi St/Buena Vista Ave: Refresh daylighting, install bollards in the existing painted bulbouts

2. Earhart Elementary School

   1. Near school parking lot driveway: Install “No U-turn” signage

   2. Packet Landing Rd/Brittany Drive: Stripe high-visibility crosswalk, red curb painting

3. Edison Elementary School

   1. Northwood Drive/Buena Vista Ave: Stripe high visibility crosswalk

   2. Pearl St/Lincoln Ave: Stripe high-visibility crosswalks and advance stop bars

4. Franklin Elementary School

   1. Benton St/Central Ave: Stripe high-visibility crosswalk and advance stop bars, relocate pedestrian crossing signage for better visibility

5. Love Elementary School

   1. Lincoln Ave between Chestnut St & Willow St: Stripe double-yellow centerline

   2. Santa Clara Avenue adjacent to school: Extend school loading zone (white curb) and install additional loading zone signage

6. Maya Lin School

   1. 8^th St/Taylor Ave: Stripe bulb-outs and install bollards, stripe high-visibility crosswalks and advance stop bars

   2. 9^th St/Taylor Ave: Stripe advanced stop bars, install daylighting

   3. 9^th St/Santa Clara Ave: Stripe bulb-outs and install bollards, stripe advance stop bars

7. Nea Community Learning Center

   1. Brush St/3^rd St: Stripe advanced stop bars, and install daylighting
