An illustration of a handshake

After a full week of discussions with Alameda Little League, AUSD leadership has created a path forward in which the League will rent facilities at the same rate charged to other non-profit organizations. The League will pay less than originally projected, however, because it will no longer need to access district restrooms or the neighboring campus during rentals, which lowers custodial costs.

“Our goal is to charge all organizations the same facility rental rates, while making it possible for the League to rent our fields and keep their programs affordable for Alameda kids,” says Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi. “We appreciate the willingness of these League Board members to meet with us, talk with us, and work within the fee schedule that applies to all other groups to work out something that was also doable for the league.”

Background

For many years, under a Joint Use Agreement, Alameda Little League was allowed to rent AUSD fields for $1/year – significantly lower than the discounted rate the district charges to other Alameda non-profit organizations. In return, Little League was responsible for maintenance of the field, and AUSD paid for all utilities (i.e., electricity and water).

In recent years, however, AUSD has determined that this arrangement is neither financially sustainable nor fair to other non-profit organizations. As such, the district communicated to the League that once the current JUA expired in July 2025, the organization would be asked to pay the same rates as other community organizations in Alameda.

Rental Fees

On Friday, September 26, AUSD senior leaders and two League board members began discussing ways to reduce the total fees charged for field rentals while still paying the same rate as all other organizations. Those talks are still ongoing, but the current proposal is that:

  • Alameda Little League will pay the same rental rate that other non-profit organizations pay

  • Alameda Little League reservations will be confirmed upon payment of fees (as required of other organizations renting our facilities)

  • Alameda Unified will maintain the fields to a middle school baseball standard, and the League will be responsible for any maintenance above that standard.

  • Custodial fees will be the same as those listed for other organizations, but the number of required custodial hours will be reduced from eight to two on Saturdays and Sundays because the League will provide their own restrooms.

  • Alameda Little League will have the option to sign up for a block of spring hours and add more as needed (e.g., for rainouts).

Access to Fields

Due to construction of a new Wood Middle School campus, access to the fields there has been challenging in recent months. As part of the district’s proposal:

  • AUSD will provide access to the Majors Field after the new road is built – currently projected for late December of this year.

  • Beginning in January 2026, AUSD will provide access to Rittler Field from Majors Field.

  • If the League is interested in renting before the road construction is complete, AUSD will provide access through the current Wood School track/field.

The League has communicated that they will arrange for their own portable restrooms for the Fall Ball at Majors Field, and will work with the City of Alameda to install portable bathrooms at Rittler Field for the spring season.

AUSD and the League are also discussing how best to remove the large storage containers at Majors Field so that the line of sight needed for student supervision and safety can be restored. This was a request made by site staff at Wood Middle School.

A memo that details these agreements was emailed to the full Little League Board on October 3. Representatives of the League have informed AUSD that the League Board will vote on whether or not to accept AUSD’s proposal at its meeting on Tuesday, October 7.

Previous public statements, as well as the memo sent to the League on October 3, are available on AUSD's Little League Field Rentals Information page.
